Alfred Glenn Zook

Alfred G. Zook passed away on 5/31/11 at the age of 92. He was born in Orrville, Ohio to John E. and Sarah E. (Beyler) Zook on January 11, 1919. He was the oldest of six children. Alfred graduated from Dalton High School in Dalton, Ohio in 1937. He was
the first in his family to have the opportunity to go to college. At Goshen College in Indiana, he sang tenor in the college choir as well as in a men’s quartet. During Alfred’s junior year he met his future bride, Rosemary, who accompanied the college choir. After graduation, in 1941, Alfred was drafted into service for his country. As a conscientious objector he served 4 years (10/41 –12/45) in Civilian Public Service (C.P.S.) at camps located in Wells Tannery, Pennsylvania; Staunton, Virginia and Belton, Montana. At Belton, he was the Camp Director overseeing 250 + men in Fire Service for Glacier National Park. In August 1949, he married Rosemary E. Roose of Nappanee, Indiana and after the wedding ceremony they moved to southern Arizona. Alfred and Rosemary taught at Benson High School in Benson, Arizona from 1952 - 54. In 1954, they moved to Lynwood, California and started a family. They moved to Burbank, CA in 1955 where Alfred
became a chemistry teacher at John Burroughs High School. Alfred was a high school teacher until June 1957, when he changed careers and became a real estate salesman and later a real estate broker. He had his own office, Al Zook Realtors, with the slogan “Look with Zook” for more than 30 years. Alfred lived in Burbank from 1958 until his death.
In 1993, his wife Rosemary passed away. In 1994, he married Mary Diehl Chisholm. Alfred enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world with his wife, Mary, and his former wife, Rosemary. In 2001,
his youngest son, Fred, passed away. Alfred is survived by his wife, Mary, four sisters – Mildred Steiner (Marcus Bishop), Denver, CO; Lillian (Sam) Yoder, Goshen, IN; Ruth Zook, Coopersville, MI; Doris (Kenneth) Hoober, Phoenix, AZ; and one brother - Gordon (Bonnie) Zook, Harrisonburg, VA; two sons - John (Christine) Zook, Burbank, CA and David (Robin) Zook, Bonsall, CA; and one daughter – Sara (Scott) Hamlin, Longmont, CO. Alfred is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Alfred G. Zook will be greatly missed by all who knew and spent time with him. He was a man of conviction and hard work who sought to be a good steward of what God had entrusted to him. He was very appreciative of God’s goodness and mercy to him, as well as the support he received from loving family members and friends over the years.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, 521 E. Olive Ave., Burbank, CA at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Burbank Temporary Aid or the Salvation Army.
