A Glendale police narcotics detective shot a robbery suspect Tuesday afternoon in North Hollywood while on an unrelated undercover operation, officials said.

The shooting occurred in the 6300 block of Colfax Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. after two Glendale police detectives witnessed an armed robbery while trailing a narcotics suspect, Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

The two detectives tried to intervene after witnessing the robbery from their undercover patrol car, but the two suspects tried to run down the officers with their car.

After the suspects rammed into the driver’s-side door of the police cruiser, the Glendale officer opened fire, wounding one of the suspects, Lorenz said. Neither officer was hurt.

One suspect was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the other was taken into custody, Lorenz said. The officers were not identified.

The investigation was turned over to the Los Angeles Police Department, which has jurisdiction of the area. The two suspects, who were not identified, were allegedly linked to several robberies in the area.

An internal Glendale police team, as well as officials with the department’s general counsel and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, will review the shooting, Lorenz said.
