Firefighters battle house garage fire in Glendale [Updated]

Glendale firefighters are knocking down a residential garage fire near Isabel and E. Dryden Street north of the Ventura (134) Freeway.

It was not immediately known what caused the blaze. Firefighters continued to extinguish flames and hot spots as of 7:30 a.m.

Several fire companies responded to the fire in the 1100 block of North Isabel Street.

[Updated 11:10 a.m.: Hazmat crews are responding to the scene after firefighters discovered suspicious substances while extinguishing the blaze.

A Los Angeles County bomb squad has also been called after firefighters encountered live ammunition inside the house or garage. No injuries were reported.]

[Updated 11:45 a.m.: Two firefighters sustained minor injuries, one a burn, the other strained muscles, in fighting the blaze that was called in at 6:21 a.m., Battalion Cheif Vince Rifini said.

Six homes on Jackson Street and three other on Isabel were evacuated within a 150-foot radius of the fire after firefighters reported explosions consistent with live ammo rounds setting off in the heat.

Los Angeles County public health officials have also arrived to assist in cleaning up chemicals in the rear garage fire.]
