Mary Alice Witherow Green died unexpectedly July 17, 2011 at her home in San Luis Obispo, CA. She was born May 20, 1936, in Los Angeles, CA, and raised in Seattle, WA where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954. Mary Alice graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA in 1959 and married Richard Harry Green that year. Her children, Kenneth Scott Green and Anne Marie Green were born while the couple lived in Pullman, WA. The Greens then relocated to La Canada, CA in 1967 where their children were raised and Mary Alice became an active part of community life. She was an advocate for the advancement of professional women through her work with the PEO, American Advancement of University Women, La Canada Youth House and the La Canada Assistance League. Mary Alice’s involvement in community affairs in La Canada culminated in being honored with the Kiwanis “La Canadan’s of the Year” award in 1990. Mary Alice moved to San Luis Obispo, Ca in 1993 and became involved in the community life there. She enjoyed her PEO, AAUW, Presbyterian Church women and loved her bridge, dining out and book groups. She recently received an award by AAUW of SLO for her lifetime of community service. Mary Alice was passionate about education. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Pullman, WA, taught English to prisoners in Walla Walla, and was a substitute teacher in La Canada. She went on to work in various jobs, as a travel agent and a property manager. Mary Alice is best known as a wonderful mother and a caring grandmother to her 7 grandchildren. Survivors include son Ken, and his wife Michelle, grandchildren Kaela, Scott and Shannon of La Canada; daughter Anne Slocum and husband Ralph, grandchildren Alyssa, Michael, Randy, and Grace of San Luis Obispo; and cousin Nancy Trout Hilliard, Mercer Island, WA. A memorial service is planned for August 2oth at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in San Luis Obispo.
