Loris Warner, a longtime resident of Burbank and an active community member, passed away last week at the age of 75.
Mrs. Warner was very active in the local community. She served as a founding member of the Burbank Historical Society from 1975-2011; she was appointed to the Burbank Library Board in 1973 and re-appointed in 1977; she helped run husband Don’s campaign for School Board in 1980; and she chaired her Hoover High School Class of 1953 Reunion Committee every five years since 1963. One of Loris’s favorite highlights was her regular ladies bridge group which she was a member for 30 years.
Her legacy of love for Burbank has lived on through her children. Scott is a registered guest speaker for the Burbank School district and provides lectures on Gold/Gem mining and the history of California. Brett has been very active in the Burbank Chamber of Commerce and his family was also active for many years in Emmanuel Church’s children’s programs. Denise was a leader in the youth and music ministries at Emmanuel Church and in the local Young Life program. She also volunteered at local hospitals and nursing homes.
“Mom absolutely loved this community,” said her oldest son, Scott Warner. “She was a loving, caring and generous person who devoted herself to her family and friends. She loved history and spent a great part of her life working hard to preserve the History of Burbank and help create the Gordon R. Howard Museum. The historical society awarded her a 35 year service award and on the plaque they wrote about two historical homes in Burbank that were being demolished. Mom went to the home and tried to stop the demolition and told the contractors she would lie in front of the bulldozer if they tried to tear down the house. She was successful in getting the project stopped and the historical society was able to remove all the historical artifacts before they were destroyed. She also worked on the relocation and restoration of the “Mentzer” home (1887) which was moved to Olive Park where all Burbank residents can view this beautiful historical structure.”
Loris was born in Glendale to Kenny and Florence Kenaston and attended Hoover High School, where she met her husband, Don, and graduated with him in 1953. They married in 1935 and set up a home in Burbank where Don Warner spent his life working for the city of Burbank as a civil servant.
Loris is survived by her husband, Don Warner; son, Scott and daughter-in-law Cathy of Burbank; son, Brett and daughter-in-law Cris of La Canada; and daughter, Denise and son-in-law Doug of Cincinnati. She had seven grandchildren including Jenelle Howe of Orlando, Florida; Josh, Hunter and Olivia Warner of La Canada; and Chadwick, Katelyn and Lindy Howe of Cincinnati.
All who knew Loris are invited to a memorial service celebrating her life at the Burbank Historical Society’s Gordon R. Howard Museum at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 21, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made in her name to the Burbank Historical Society, 115 North Lomita Street, Burbank, CA, 91505.
