Joan D. Schrotenboer, 77, died October 2, 2011 in Burbank, California. She passed peacefully and spent her last several weeks surrounded by family, many friends and loved ones. She was a long-time resident of Holland, Michigan, but spent the last seven years with her son, Douglas S. Carlson, and his husband, Jason A. Hobson, in her little cottage behind their Burbank home, where she kept the humming birds hummin’ and the local finch’s fat. Joan was a frequent volunteer for meals-on-wheels, attended Valley Baptist Church, and was a greeter at the Bob Hope Airport and a “young” member of the Red Hat Ladies Society. She loved her garden, spending time with her family and travelling with her good friend, Sally Herpolsheimer.

She is survived by her daughters, Georgia Middleton (Ernie) and Pam Starnes (Bob), son, Douglas (Jason), along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her older sisters, Rosemary Wessels and Bea French.

There will be a cocktail party to Celebrate Joan’s “Life Well Lived” at her son’s home. Call 818.438.4322 for time and location. Instead of sending flowers, share an act of kindness with a friend or volunteer for those in need. That’s what Joanie would want.
