Unity Fest slated for Sunday

For the second year in a row, TV celebrity Mario Lopez is slated to be a celebrity guest at Unity Fest, an international street fair aimed at promoting Glendale’s cultural diversity.

The 10th annual Unity Fest will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday on Brand Boulevard between Wilson and California avenues.

Zizette Mullins, Glendale’s community relations coordinator, said event-goers can expect even more diverse food than last year, larger crowds and more games for children. And as in years past, international dance and music performances will take center stage.

About 10,000 people attended the free event last year.

“It basically brings different cultures together in the same area, on the same block and celebrates our diversity so we have a better understanding of each other — as who we are as human beings through food and through entertainment,” Mullins said.

For the first time, a group of local Koreans will be cooking up Korean barbecue in an effort to better integrate the Korean community into the event, Mullins said. Glendale has two sister cities in Korea.

There will also be six food trucks cooking up international fare — three times as many as last year, Mullins said.

A country music band is also scheduled to perform.
