PTA: Red Ribbon Week coming to schools

Red Ribbon Week is Oct. 24 to 28 and schools in our district will be participating in various activities in an effort to educate students to maintain a drug-free environment and make healthy choices. The theme this year is “UR2 Cool4 Drugs” and activities will include assemblies, writing essays, making pledges, wearing bracelets and tying red ribbons around the school.

Monte Vista Elementary

The community is invited to the PTA evening at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the cafeteria where a special free seminar will be held on helping frazzled kids in today’s society. Guest speakers Ann Garrett and Nancy Goodell will educate parents on how to deal with children who may be too stressed. They are also authors of several parenting books and will be on hand to sell and sign books, as well as answer questions.

Mountain Avenue Elementary

During Red Ribbon Week, the PTA will bring “Rachel’s Challenge” to all grades at assemblies in the auditorium on Oct. 27. This character-building program motivates students to become more aware of the power of their words to both hurt and help.

PTA hosts its annual Halloween Carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 on the lower playground with game booths, prizes, crafts, bouncers and the ever-popular Korean BBQ organized by the Korean Mother’s Group. Tickets are sold on site.

The Reflections Awards Ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 4 to honor students whose entries best reflect the theme in poetry, writing and various visual arts such as photography and videography.

Valley View Elementary

The Harvest Carnival is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 on the lower playground. Activities include a covered blow-up slide, money booth, Stand the Bottle and Hit the Spot, and sixth grade will be hosting a Haunted House! Food, snacks and fun are in store for all who attend.

The PTA will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the auditorium followed by the Reflections Showcase.

The PTA Holiday Workshop is after school Nov. 4 in the auditorium. Each child will create a special gift for a parent or family member.

Lincoln Elementary

The PTA meeting is at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in the auditorium.

The Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser takes place the week of Nov. 7. More information will be sent home in Thursday Folders.
