A public memorial honoring former Glendale Mayor Larry Zarian, who died of cancer Oct. 13 at the age of 73, has been scheduled for Monday at the Alex Theatre in downtown.

The “Celebration of Life” event -- hosted by the city, Glendale Arts and Glendale Adventist Medical Center, where Zarian was a board member -- will honor the man known as “The People’s Mayor” and his years of public service.

Zarian, the first Armenian American elected to Glendale City Council, was also a director for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and served as a state transportation commissioner.

Later this month, city officials will officially rename the Glendale Transportation Center the “Larry Zarian Transportation Center.”

The memorial at the Alex Theatre starts with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30 p.m. The event is free to the public, but since space is limited, organizers this week encouraged those planning to attend to RSVP by calling (818) 409-8100, or online at GlendaleAdventist.com/Larry.

Free parking will be available at the Orange Street garage.
