Former chief executive of Pasadena-based Avery Dennison Corp. dies

Charles Miller, the former chief executive and president of the board of Pasadena-based Avery Dennison Corp., died in his Pasadena home Nov. 23, the company announced Wednesday.He was 83.

Miller, who suffered from complications of emphysema, spent 47 years with the company and is credited with lifting it to its status as a internationally-recognized Fortune 500 manufacturer of adhesives, medical supplies and consumer products.

He was chief executive from 1977 to 1998, and was a member of the company’s board of directors for more than 30 years.

“Chuck Miller’s impact on Avery Dennison was immeasurable,” Dean Scarborough, the company’s current board chairman, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Every aspect of our business, from vision to strategy to execution to culture, has been shaped for the better by his passion and imagination.”

Over the years, Miller served as chairman of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Greater Los Angeles, was a member of the organizing committee for the 1984 Olympic Games and was a trustee at Occidental College.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the board for the Rose Bowl Legacy Campaign and Pasadena-based Southern California Public Radio.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Carolyn; five children; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Dec. 12 at The Langham Huntington.
