Most schools remain closed amid ongoing power outage

La Cañada schools will remain closed Friday as an ongoing power outage keeps much of the city in the dark.

It is the second consecutive day of cancelled classes in the wake of a powerful windstorm overnight Wednesday that hammered the Crescenta and San Gabriel valleys, splitting trees, damaging vehicles and homes and leaving thousands without power.

Flintridge Prep was the only school to open for class Friday.

City Manager Mark Alexander said Thursday night that there is no exact timeline for the restoration of power in La La Cañada, although Southern California Edison crews are working to restore the city’s main power line.

The school cancellation includes La La Cañada Unified, St. Francis High School and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Families were notified via automated telephone calls that went out at about 6:30 a.m., as well as by email and Twitter.

The Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Winter Ball, scheduled for Saturday, has also been postponed. An alternative date will be announced in the coming days, school officials said.
