Checkpoints yield DUI, narcotics arrests

Eleven drivers were arrested during the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence at two separate checkpoints in Glendale.

On Saturday night, a checkpoint at Los Feliz Boulevard and Gardena Avenue resulted in eight DUI arrests and two narcotics arrests, according to statistics released Monday by the Glendale Police Department.

In addition, 12 people were arrested for driving without a license, and police arrested two for driving with a suspended or revoked license.

At the checkpoint, 566 vehicles were stopped and police detained 28 drivers for field sobriety tests.

More than 1,000 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, assisted by officers from the Pasadena and San Marino police departments.

The Saturday operation was part of a state-funded program called “Avoid the 100,” where police throughout Los Angeles County work together on high-profile drunk-driving enforcement, Glendale Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

A checkpoint at Brand Boulevard and Milford Street on Friday night yielded three DUI arrests and one arrest for narcotics, according to stats from Glendale police.

One person was arrested for driving without a license.

During the operation, 665 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 186 were stopped and 10 field sobriety tests were administered.

That checkpoint, also funded by a state grant, was part of a local effort by the Glendale Police Department to nab drunk drivers, Lorenz said.
