Planning underway for the new year

Winter Recess begins in the Glendale Unified School District on Thursday and runs through Jan. 6 with students returning to classes Monday, Jan. 9. Though hallways may be quiet, staff and PTA volunteers are busy planning activities that will resume in January.

Glendale High School

Glendale High students can attend the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) Interpretation Jan. 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the school library. This is a free event for parents and students. Scores will be available upon arrival and the discussion will help in understanding how students performed and how they can improve on future standardized tests. There is also free tutoring now available on the Glendale High campus. Students needing a little help or a quiet place for homework can go to the library Monday through Thursday before school from 6:50 to 7:50 a.m. and after school from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. where a professional tutor can assist. Minimum day schedules permit students to stay from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. Contact Mrs. Wazirkajoyan in room 4113 with questions.

Wilson Middle School

Students and staff at Wilson have announced that the Sarah Gianos Instrumental Music Memorial Fund has been set up to accept donations in memory of Gianos whose work at Wilson will never be forgotten. All gifts will benefit current and future instrumental music students by carrying on her legacy of music at the school. Checks or cash donations can be directed to: Sarah Gianos Memorial Fund, c/o Wilson Middle School, 1221 Monterey Road, Glendale, CA 91206.

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary

School Liaison Madelaine Motallebi reports that the VW Voices Chorus, comprised of 100-plus kids, performed a wonderful Winter Concert on Monday in the Dads Club. Deb Beyer, chorus director, had been working with students in grades 3 to 6 learning holiday-themed songs for several months. The young singers were excited to perform for their families, teachers, and fellow students — so much so that they performed two assemblies on that day.

Michael Tsaparian and Mike Ruiz have made assurances that preparations are underway for Verdugo Woodlands’ Annual Pancake Breakfast at the Dads Club from 7:30 a.m. to Noon Saturday, Jan. 28. This is their second year chairing this fabulous community-wide breakfast and everyone is welcome. For only $5, guests get fresh-squeezed orange juice, gourmet coffee and sausages and pancakes. Proceeds go toward the insurance, utilities and maintenance of the nonprofit Dads Club Community Building. For information contact vwdadsclub@gmail.com.

Mark your calendars. Planning is underway by Janet Lazier, Blood Drive chair, for VWPTA’s Third Annual Red Cross Blood Drive Sunday, Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dads Club. Also planned on site is the “Be the Match” Bone Marrow Registry.

Save the date for Friday, March 3 says Rose Watson, “The Ritz” benefit chair. The Ritz fundraiser is expected to once again successfully raise much-needed funds for Verdugo Woodlands’ Art, Education & Technology programs. The 2012 event will be held at the La Canada Flintridge Country Club.
