A step backward in local coverage?

I always look forward to reading the Glendale News-Press’ All-Area sports teams. This has been a wonderful way to recognize athletes in the Glendale, La Crescenta and La Cañada Flintridge area.

But in Sunday’s paper, the News-Press All-Area team included runners from Burbank all the way to Pasadena at Maranatha High.

The All-Area team in girls tennis had the same thing, featuring athletes from Pasadena and faraway San Marino. Thus, only one tennis player from the Glendale area (a Flintridge Prep player) was featured among the eight athletes chosen for the “All-Area” team.

This is a step backward in local coverage. It does a disservice to athletes in the Glendale area, who are now less likely to get the kudos they deserve.
