On Campus at GCC
Gallery Exhibit is Both Art and Web Project
The exhibition “werk.by” continues in the Glendale Community College Art Gallery through Feb. 2.
Los Angeles artist Andy Alexander’s exhibit is both art show and the launch of his web project “werk.by.” The project is an installation, application and new website all located in the college gallery and is an open invitation to artists and art lovers to engage in art-related dialogue. Alexander’s website is an attempt to create an avenue for critical feedback on his work, something he was missing after earning his MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
As a professional artist, Alexander has created sculptures, drawings and installations that fuse minimalism, science fiction, cinema and urban music. He has also worked as a web designer and creative director in graphic arts. He has exhibited his work at China Art Objects in Los Angeles, Starkwhite Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand, the Block Gallery in Sydney, Australia and Galerie Michel Rein in Paris, France.
The GCC Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Thursday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The college is located at 1500 N. Verdugo Road.
Community Services Program Offers Trips and Tours
The GCC Community Services Education program offers one-day trips and tours by deluxe motor coach departing from and returning to GCC’s main campus upper parking lot.
Upcoming tours include JPL’s Goldstone Complex on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The trip will take guests to the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex on the Fort Irwin Army Base in the Mojave Desert. The behind-the-scenes tour includes a visit to the Goldstone Museum, a view of the huge antennas that allow JPL and NASA to “listen” to outer space. Lunch is included. The trip cost is $69.
On Friday, Feb. 24 there is a trip to the Indio Date Festival and Riverside County Fair. Indio’s National Date Festival began in 1921 as a celebration of the date harvest and is now widely known for its quirky attractions. There will also be a stop at Hadley’s, famous for date shakes, nuts and breads. The cost is $69.
A geographer-guided trip to Joshua Tree National Park with picnic lunch is offered on Saturday, March 3. The excursion will feature unique rock formations and an easy nature walk while learning about the plant and animal life of the area. A stop at Key’s View Lookout will provide views of the Coachella Valley and Salton Sea. The cost is $79.
There are also train trips offered such as the Santa Barbara Orchid Show and the Fillmore and Western Railway Murder Mystery Train.
In addition to the trips and tours, the Community Services Education program also offers fee-based, noncredit evening classes at the college’s Garfield Campus, Hoover High School and Rosemont Middle School in La Crescenta. Important Dates and Campus Closures
The college is closed on Fridays from Jan. 13 through Feb. 10. The hours of operation for Admissions and Records can be found at www.glendale.edu/index.aspx?page=125. The college will be closed for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, Jan. 16.
Priority registration for continuing students and new students who applied for admission before the deadline is ongoing through Jan. 20. Open registration begins Jan. 23. The spring semester begins Feb. 13.
