Verdugo Woodlands hosts blood drive
There is no denying that hearts of all kinds take the lead in February, so families of Verdugo Woodlands Elementary will surely want to take part in the third annual Red Cross Blood Drive on Feb. 12 at the Dads Club, 1728 Cañada Blvd. Janet Lazier, blood drive chairwoman, asks parents to check the school’s online Thursday folder to download appointment cards.
“Just fill out the appointment cards and turn them in to your child’s teacher,” she says.
Potential donors may choose between three shifts. “Be the Match” Bone Marrow Registry will also be on site, where a painless cheek swab is all that is necessary to become a member who can potentially be the match that can save a life. Glendale High School
Glendale High’s oh-so-popular Unconcert happens at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17 in the auditorium. Winter Formal comes in on Feb. 18.
Wilson Middle School
Congratulations to Wilson’s Spelling Bee Team for taking first place in the district competition. Spelling their way to the top were Jae In Song, Franz Gillian Valerio, Jared Ortaliza and Alex Kirakosyan. The PTSA Founders Day Tea and association meeting are on Feb. 14, and the PTSA Executive Board meets at 6 p.m. Feb. 28.
R.D. White Elementary
R.D. White hosted a successful Family Math Night, in which everything added up perfectly. The most recent Adopt-A-Block saw energetic volunteers gathering on a sunny Saturday to help keep the school and neighborhood beautiful for all.
Verdugo Woodlands Elementary
Fishermen are not the only ones telling tales. Deb Beyer, Cultural Arts chair, has arranged a visit by multi-ethnic storytelling troupe “We Tell Stories” to present another exciting assembly on Feb. 8. Students will hear “Earth Tales” as they journey through stories to visit cultures long before our time that existed closely with Mother Earth. Stories include “Who Owns the Land,” a Norwegian myth; “The Invisible Hunters,” a tale from Nicaragua; and a creation myth titled “The Rainbow Bridge” from the Chumash of California.
Moving from ancient days to happy days, dads and daughters can join in on a Fabulous ’50s Sock Hop from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Dads Club. Nina Lopez, Father Daughter Dance chair, invites dads to “Rock around the clock with your best girl, or girls, for $25 a couple and $10 for each additional child.” Tickets must be purchased by Feb. 6.
Family Reading Night is Feb. 29. This cozy gathering, organized by Mrs. Haug, takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the school.
Committee members are organizing the eighth annual “The Ritz” Dinner Dance and Auction set for March 3, says Rose Watson, chair. The event, to be held at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, captures much-needed funds for the school’s Arts, Education & Technology programs. “Come have fun socializing, shopping at the auctions, dining, and dancing,” says Watson.
