Glendale’s Iris Kim is a co-winner of a Bob Hope Airport art competition

Three high school students representing each of the cities that oversee Bob Hope Airport will have their art displayed in a big way at the airfield later this year after besting 145 other entries.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority announced the winners on Monday from each of the member city’s respective school districts.

They are: Iris Kim from Crescenta Valley High School in Glendale; Nalani Hernandez of Burbank High School; and Ali Jakubczyk of Pasadena High School - all of them 12th-graders.

It is the fifth year the airport has hosted the art competition, in which students compete to have their artwork enlarged to 16 feet by 26 feet banners that are hung from the terminal tower - a prominent location that ensures thousands of eyes look at it for months at a time. Each of the winning entries will get its share of the limelight for about three months starting with Iris Kim in September, airport officials announced.

The contest theme this year was “Cleared for Take Off.”

Each school district will also get $3,000 for arts education programs. Since the contest began, each district has received a total $10,500 through the program, according to airport officials.

Artwork from the second- and third-place winners will join their first place counterparts for a display in Terminal B. The next contest - open to all Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena unified high school students - is scheduled to start in September.
