May 20, 1927 – March 1, 2012

Robert was born in Los Angeles, CA where his father Lyman was an art director for an advertising company. His mother Marcia was a school teacher in Utah before moving to California. Bob graduated from Glendale High School and joined the Navy. After his Navy service he attended UCLA, graduating with a degree in business.

Bob married Dorothy Jean Zirkelbach in 1954 and soon thereafter began his career with Lockheed Aircraft where he worked until his retirement in 1988. His work took him to Canada, Germany, France and Switzerland. He enjoyed 11 years living abroad with his family.

Retirement allowed Bob to travel, hike and cycle. He cycled around England and Scotland and backpacked throughout India and Nepal. In 1989, he rode his bicycle across the United States. Immediately upon returning home, he started planning his next cross-country bike trip. He repeated this epic journey seven more times. When not riding his bike, he was hiking vigorously with the Sierra Club. He and his loyal Collie, Rex, had many friends around Burbank. The two of them volunteered to visit with residents of local nursing homes. Bob discovered a flair for public speaking when he joined Toastmasters, where he was a regular until his passing.

He is survived by his sister Patricia (husband Bob), his son James (wife Mary) and daughter Nancy. Bob was the loving grandfather of Ryan (wife Kristina) and Sammy, and great grandfather of Laura and Clara. Bob was a devoted husband to Dotti who passed away in 2011. Bob genuinely loved people, was independent, honest and adventurous until the end.

A memorial service will be held at 9600 Cabrini Drive Burbank, California 91504, Saturday, March 10, 2012, at 1 p.m.
