The Hoover High School community on Friday celebrated the latest addition to a mural born out of a collaboration between students and a local artist.

The piece, which includes large painted tiles installed on a wall in the central quad, began to take shape last year under the direction of muralist Roger Dolin.

The project grew to include contributions from students at Daily and Hoover high schools, as well as from community members, who were invited to paint tiles to be incorporated into the piece.

“As soon as you walk into the quad, your attention is drawn to it,” Hoover Principal Jennifer Earl said. “When you look at it from far away, it is a beautiful visual piece, and when you get up close, there are so many beautiful little details.”

The unveiling Friday marked a kickoff of sorts for the third annual Glenwood Road Block Party, which will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event is designed as a celebration of the arts at Keppel Elementary, Toll Middle and Hoover High schools.
