High winds expected to make way for clear, sunny weekend

High winds that roared through L.A. County overnight and Friday morning should calm down by midafternoon, making for a nice weekend weather-wise, the National Weather Service said.

The weekend forecast was expected to be clear and sunny, meteorologists said.

The NWS issued wind advisories for inland L.A. County mountains, the Santa Monica Mountains and the Santa Clarita Valley until noon Friday. In those areas, winds speeds will average up to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

An advisory for less severe winds is in effect for the San Fernando Valley until 9 a.m. Friday.

NWS meteorologist David Sweet said high winds are fairly normal for spring.

“Instead of getting the center of the storms, we’re sort of on the periphery,” Sweet said. “As you get more and more into spring, the storms don’t quite make it as far south as they did during wintertime. Instead of getting the wind and rain, we get just the wind.”

Temperatures Friday will reach highs in the mid to upper 60s along the coast and the mid 70s inland and downtown.

Sweet said there’s also about a 30% chance of rain Tuesday night into Wednesday and Thursday into April 13.
