Cleanup project prunes roses, builds public garden

About 400 people took part in the Great American Cleanup project in Glendale on Saturday, volunteering to help with a variety of beautification projects throughout the city.

Participants gathered in the 100 block of North Isabel Street, where they were matched up with a city staff member or a volunteer leader before they went on their way to their assignments.

Projects included construction of a new community garden next to a Habitat for Humanity project on Geneva Street near the Ventura (134) Freeway and expansion of a student garden at Wilson Middle School.

In the rose garden at Fremont Park, volunteers did some weeding and learned how to prune rose bushes.

The local participants joined about more than 3 million volunteers across the country who took part in Great American Cleanup projects in their communities.
