L.A. County Superior Court layoffs to take effect today

Los Angeles County Superior Court will lay off more than 150 employees Friday and slash the salaries of dozens more, as the nation’s largest trial court system continues to grapple with shrinking state funding.

The cuts mean Department 3 at the Glendale courthouse, which handled civil matters, and Burbank’s Department C, which handles family cases, including restraining orders, will be shuttered.

The number of jobs cut is about half of what court officials previously said they might ax. But nearly 200 other employees will be bumped to lower-level positions or part-time status, with some shedding up to 40% of their salaries, the court said in a news release.

The cuts could also affect a plans for a new 110,000-square-foot Glendale courthouse on 600 block of East Broadway, which could cost $123.9 million.

The moves are part of the court’s plan to shave $30 million from its budget. Officials are also shuttering courtrooms, paring back the use of court reporters and closing a juvenile court program that handled nearly 80,000 new citations last year.
