A 41-year-old Sylmar man was arrested Saturday after he was spotted sitting inside a stolen 1997 Honda Accord, police said.

Luis Carranza was taken into custody on suspicion of grand theft auto and possessing methamphetamine, which police allegedly found inside his pants pocket.

When officers allegedly spotted Carranza drinking a beverage about 8:15 p.m. from a brown paper bag while seated inside the Honda at Colorado Street and Verdugo Road, they checked the license plate number and discovered it was reported stolen in June from the 1200 block of North Columbus Avenue.

Carranza claimed the Honda belonged to a friend who let him borrow it to go to the store, according to police reports.

Police searched the Honda and allegedly found a shaved key, which are used to steal cars, in the ignition.
