Sports Roundup: Maranatha basketball defeats Temple City in season opener

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Maranatha 70, Temple City 46: Michael DeMeester led the Minutemen to a season-opening home win on Friday evening.

DeMeester scored 16 points and added eight rebounds, while Brandon Pomroy added 12 points for Maranatha.

La Salle 76, Marshall Fundamental 55: The Lancers moved to 3-0 in the Rose City Roundball Classic with a victory Thursday evening at La Salle.

Milan Acquuah scored 26 points and added six assists for La Salle, while Vance Jackson tallied 20 points and 12 rebounds.

A day earlier, the Lancers topped Los Angeles Marshall, 76-46, as Jackson scored 21 points, leading the Lancers to a pool-play victory Wednesday evening at La Salle.

Acquaah added 17 points for the Lancers.

BOYS’ SOCCER

South Pasadena 3, Duarte 0: Thanks to another strong start, the Tigers are 2-0 on the season after a nonleague home victory Friday afternoon.

Junior Zack Dunn and sophomore Kevin Yonami both scored within the match’s first minutes as both were assisted by Justin Fernandez and Heven Gomez, respectively. Gomez then closed out the scoring in the second half on goal in 65th minute. Tigers goalie Chris Mejia preserved his second consecutive shutout with five saves.

Two days earlier, the Tigers opened the season with a 6-0 win at Schurr.

Dunn led the way in scoring two goals and adding two assists, while Gomez added two goals. Ramon Gutierrez tallied a goal and an assist for South Pasadena, while Mejia finished with six saves and also scored a penalty kick.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Pasadena Poly 4, Pasadena 0: The quartet of Noel Askins, Evan Gancedo, Katie Wardlaw and Ryan Casey all netted goals for the Panthers (2-0) in a nonleague road victory Friday afternoon.

Askins added two assists, while Becca Hanel and Casey also contributed an assist and Panthers’ goalies Mia Fernandez and Julia Yun combined for one save.

Bulldogs goalie Talar Boshgezenyan finished with six saves in Pasadena’s season-opener.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

San Marino 45, Maranatha 41: Despite trailing, 21-17, at halftime, the Titans outscored the host Minutemen by eight points in the third quarter in rallying for a nonleague victory.

Senior guard Leigh Kunitake led San Marino (2-3) with 18 points and five steals, while guard Emma Wong added 12 points and Jessica Pleitez scored 10 points off the bench, including hitting two pivotal three-pointers in the third quarter.

Maranatha fell to 0-1 despite 18 points and nine rebounds from Noelle Oki and 12 points from Fola Adesina.
