Glendale City Council field gets smaller after Perlita M. del Rey’s nomination paperwork denied

The slate of City Council candidates on the April ballot has been whittled down by one after the Los Angeles County registrar-recorder denied Perlita M. del Rey’s nomination paperwork.

Although del Rey submitted more than the requisite 100 signatures to get on the ballot, county officials found that 29% of her 118 signatures were not from registered voters or Glendale residents.

Registrar officials also couldn’t find any background information on some of the signatures, said spokeswoman Elizabeth Knox.

With del Rey out of contention, the field of City Council candidates now stands at 12.

Del Rey did not respond to emails, and the phone number she provided on her candidate paperwork was disconnected.

Former Zoning Administrator Edith Fuentes is now the only female Asian contender for Glendale’s highest elected position. If elected, Fuentes would become Glendale’s first Asian council member.

The City Council has long been mostly white and male. While the majority of the roughly 192,000 residents are white, Filipinos make up most of Glendale’s Asian population. And at 16.4% of the population, Asians are the third-largest minority in the city.

Five candidates this year are Armenian.

The other candidates are: Jefferson Black, a teacher; Rick Barnes, a Realtor; Zareh Sinanyan, an attorney; Mike Mohill, a retired businessman; Herbert Molano, a business owner; Aram Kazazian, an architect; Chahe Keuroghelian, a business owner; Roland Kedikian, an attorney; and Sam Engel, former Neighborhood Services Administrator.

Incumbent council members Laura Friedman and Ara Najarian are also running to keep their seats.
