Glendale fire near knock down, evacuations remain for Glenoaks and Chevy Chase canyons
Glendale Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said the “head” of a 75-acre brush fire in the canyons of North Glendale “is pretty much knocked down right now.”
Evacuation orders remain in place for hundreds of homes in the Glenoaks and Chevy Chase canyons as fire crews and water-dropping helicopters continue to fight the blaze.
More than 200 firefighters, including five hand crews, are in the field, Scoggins said.
Roughly half of the 2,200 homes in Chevy Chase Canyon – and all of the 700 homes in Glenoaks Canyon -- had been evacuated shortly after the fire broke out just after 2 p.m., fire officials said.
Glenoaks Elementary School was also evacuated and Glendale Community College closed campus for the day.
An evacuation center had been set up at the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E Colorado St.
The fire started near the Glendale (2) and Ventura (134) freeways, and was spread by embers in the wind to the nearby canyons, Scoggins said.
