SPORTS ROUNDUP: San Marino High, South Pasadena move on from swim prelims

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

San Marino, South Pasadena in CIF Southern Section Division I prelims: San Marino’s Kailyn Koh advanced to the championship race of the 50-yard freestyle by taking fourth in the prelims in 23.67 seconds Thursday at Riverside City College. She also took sixth in the 100 free (51.29).

The senior also anchored the Titans 200-freestyle relay team of Eliza Koh, Alison Day and Tiffany Warmuth. The group took sixth in 1:38.40.

The division I finals will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. With the top-nine finishers in each race Thursday swimming in championship races Saturday and the 10th to 18th swimmers taking part in a consolation final. The 19th and 20th-place finishers are alternates.

Both Kohs, Warmuth and Campbell also advanced to the championship final of the 400-freestyle relay (3:34.85). Warmuth took 12th in the 200 free (1:52.69).

South Pasadena sent its 400-freestyle relay team onto the consolation finals with an 18th-place finish in 3:39.24. The group was made up of Laura Mendenhall, Samantha Zavala, Liza Echeverria and Grace Wakabyashi.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

San Marino, Loyola in CIF Southern Section Division I prelims: Loyola swimmer and Pasadena resident Corey John was also runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.87 seconds Thursday at Riverside City College. The junior also took sixth in the 100 free (46.20).

The division I finals will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. With the top-nine finishers in each race Thursday swimming in championship races Saturday and the 10th to 18th swimmers taking part in a consolation final. The 19th and 20th-place finishers are alternates.

San Marino’s Javier Lopez also qualified for the championship 100 butterfly race, by taking sixth in the prelims in 49.87. The Titans also had Daniel To take sixth in the 100 backstroke (50.96).

That duo teamed in the Titans 200-medley relay team, which included Nathan Tsai and Samuel To, to lead it to seventh in 1:35.60.

Loyola’s Kyle Otazu, a Pasadena resident, also took 10th in the 200 free (1:42.36) and 12th in the 100 free (46.97). Loyola’s Oliver Maarse, a Pasadena resident, also tied for 10th in the 50 free (21.38).

Maarse, Otazu and John also led the 200-freestyle (1:25.45) and 400-freestyle relay (3:07.44) teams to fourth-place finishes (1:25.45). San Marino’s Samuel To, Daniel To, Nathan Tsai and Lopez took 18th in the race (1:28.57).

Lopez also took 16th in the 200 individual medley (1:54.64).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

South Pasadena 3, Beverly Hills 0: The Tigers are moving onto the quarterfinals after knocking off host Beverly Hills 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 in Thursday evening’s CIF Southern Section Division III second round.

“The atmosphere wasn’t that crazy and they really didn’t bring that big a crowd,” Tigers Coach Ben Diaz said. “We came out loud. We’re our own crowd.”

Robert Adamson led South Pasadena (26-1) with 16 kills, while Richard Yu added 13 kills and Max Luck (two aces) finished with eight kills. Setter David Barker finished with 40 assists and libero Nathan Lee added 10 digs.

The Tigers will host Heritage Christian on Saturday at either 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. A time will be announced Friday afternoon.

BASEBALL

Pasadena Poly 13, Webb 3 (six innings): The Panthers kept their league championship hopes alive thanks to a big Prep League victory Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers’ duo of Joey Asperger and Zack Bern had a hand in driving in almost half the team’s offense. Bern homered and drove in three runs, while Asperger also homered, scored two runs and connected on three RBI.

Luke Asperger and Caleb Lee also drove in two runs, while Michael Bowman, David Orndorff and Griffin Carter also scored three runs for the Panthers (14-7, 8-3), who need to defeat Webb (18-3, 9-2) on the road Friday to force a three-way tie for first with Webb and Flintridge Prep (15-8, 9-3).

Marshall Fundamental 19, Kilpatrick 5 (five innings): The Eagles (12-9, 5-5) closed out the regular season with their fourth straight win on Thursday afternoon in Delphic League play and kept their hopes alive of earning a postseason at-large berth.

Junior Charlie Henderson finished three for four for Marshall with three RBI and two runs scored, whole Brandon Salmon doubled and scored three runs and Damon Zambrana tripled and scored three runs.

SOFTBALL

Pasadena Poly 8, Webb 3: The Panthers closed their regular season with a home Prep League victory on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, Poly finishes 14-5 overall and 10-2 in league, good for second place.
