Schiff introduces Genocide resolution, again

In what has become an annual exercise, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) this week introduced a House resolution calling on the U.S. to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide, in which roughly 1.5 million Armenians were massacred by Ottoman Turks from 1915 to 1918.

Schiff has introduced similar resolutions in years past, all of them failing in Congress amid fears that official recognition would anger Turkey, an important military ally in the Middle East.

Schiff introduced the latest resolution recognizing the genocide with Reps. Michael Grimm (R-NY), David Valadao (R-CA) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ), the congressman’s office announced Thursday.

“With each passing day, we lose a few more of the dwindling number of survivors,” Schiff said in a statement. “We should all feel a powerful sense of urgency and the profound call of moral duty to recognize the Armenian Genocide unequivocally and without delay.”

The resolution calls upon President Obama to work toward equitable and constructive Armenian-Turkish relations predicated on the Turkey’s full acknowledgment of the genocide.
