Share

Jobless rates in Burbank and Glendale followed a statewide trend upward last month, according to figures released Friday.

The unemployment rate in Glendale rose to 9.4% from 8.9% in June, and Burbank came in at 8.8%, up from 8%, according to data released by the California Employment Development Department.

Statewide, the jobless rate increased to 8.7% last month, up from 8.5% in June, but it’s a significant improvement from 10.6% reported in July 2012.

Education and health services reported job losses and there was a reduction in government positions, most of which were attributed to a season decline because of the end of summer break.

The motion-picture and sound-recording industries posted job gains, according to the data.

Jobless rates in other local communities also increased, with La Cañada Flintridge coming in at 4.2% and the La Crescenta-Montrose area at 5.3%, up from 3.9% and 5%, respectively, in June.
