Jobless rate falls in Burbank, Glendale

Jobless rates in Burbank and Glendale didn’t follow the statewide trend last month, falling despite an overall increase in the unemployment rate in California, according to figures released Friday.

The unemployment rate in Glendale fell to 8.9% from 9.4% in July, and Burbank came in at 8.3%, down from 8.8%, according to data released by the California Economic Development Department.

Statewide, the jobless rate increased to 8.9% last month, up from 8.7% in June, though that number is significantly lower than the state’s 10.4% jobless rate of August a year ago.

Within Los Angeles County, educational and health services added the most jobs from July to August, with the bulk of the gains in colleges, universities and professional school and social assistance.

Information jobs and government jobs both saw drops in their employment levels in August, with motion picture and sound recording accounting for a majority of the losses, according to the data.

Jobless rates in other local communities also fell, with La Cañada Flintridge coming in at 3.9% and the La Crescenta-Montrose area at 5%, down from 4.2% and 5.3% respectively in July.
