A boy suffered serious injuries Thursday after he was struck by a vehicle as he chased a tennis ball that rolled onto Verdugo Road, police said.

The boy, who is approximately 13 years old, was taken to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he was being treated for a fractured pelvis and internal injuries, Glendale Police Sgt. Peter Pressnall said.

The motorist, who remained at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana, according to Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

The boy reportedly ran west on Verdugo Road as he chased the ball just after 3 p.m., when he was struck by the motorist, who was driving north on the same block, according to police officials. The boy hit the car hood, damaging it and the windshield.

Police said the boy also suffered multiple cuts.

Lorenz said it appears the boy was at fault, running out into traffic, according to preliminary reports.

Traffic was tied up for several hours on Verdugo Road between Glenoaks Boulevard and Monterey Road while police investigated the accident.
