A 25-year-old man was arrested this week after he allegedly stole a Glendale woman’s idling car, then tried to run over her husband and crashed into a neighbor’s fence, police said.

Jose Alvarez was taken into custody about 10:50 p.m. Wednesday after he fled the crash and was found inside the car in the area of 53rd Street and Lincoln Avenue in Los Angeles, according to Glendale Police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.

The woman told police her car engine was still running as it was parked in the driveway of her home in the 400 block of West Colorado Street.

She was moving items from her car to her home about 9:45 p.m., when she suddenly heard her car moving.

The woman ran outside where she saw someone pulling out of the driveway and driving away, Lightfoot said.

Her husband began yelling at the driver, who reportedly veered her car toward him.

The woman’s husband was grazed by the vehicle, but was not seriously injured, Lightfoot said.

The driver reportedly continued driving, but lost control of the car. He crashed into a neighbor’s fence, where it was briefly stuck, she added.

He reportedly was able to dislodge the car and then drove away from the scene.

Police later found him and arrested him on suspicion of grand theft auto and assault with a deadly weapon, Lightfoot said.
