Woman charged with abduction of daughter to be extradited to Alaska

A 39-year-old mother will be extradited to Alaska, where she is wanted for allegedly abducting her daughter two years ago and fleeing to California, officials said.

Cora Francis Malone, 39, waived extradition after being charged in Los Angeles County with one count of being a fugitive from justice, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the county district attorney’s office.

“She is going to go back to Alaska,” Robison said.

Malone now sits in a Los Angeles County jail as she waits to be returned to Alaskan authorities.

She was rearrested Dec. 4 on an outstanding warrant for her daughter’s abduction after she walked into the Glendale Police Department to recover her personal belongings taken during her initial run-in with officers last month, police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot said.

Malone, who is the girl’s biological mother, reportedly fled Anchorage, Alaska, with her daughter after she found out state officials were taking custody of her.

Glendale police found the missing girl on Nov. 14 when they pulled over a vehicle on Foothill Boulevard in La Crescenta for alleged seat-belt violations and she was inside.

Malone, two other adults, and her other daughter, who is 3 years old and has a different father, were also inside the 1988 White GMC SUV.

During the traffic stop, police discovered that Alaskan officials filed abduction charges against Malone for kidnapping her daughter. An active warrant was also issued for Malone in connection with the case, police said.

The group reportedly were homeless and living in hotels. They had spent the night in the SUV, police said.

Police immediately took Malone into custody for the alleged abduction and removed her children.

Still, county prosecutors initially declined to file charges against Malone following the first arrest because Alaskan officials reportedly did not want to extradite her on an outstanding $5,000 warrant.

But Glendale and Alaskan police continued working together to obtain a $25,000 warrant in order to arrest and extradite Malone for abducting her daughter.
