A Moreno Valley man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly attacked a driver who was sitting in his car, placed him in a headlock and tried to rob him, police said.

The driver parked his car just after 1 p.m. in the 500 block of North Brand Boulevard and remained seated inside, when he suddenly heard someone running up behind him, according to Glendale police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.

Seconds later, Robert Maalea, 38, reportedly placed the driver in a headlock, she added.

The driver fought back and exited his car, but Maalea reportedly maintained his hold on him.

Maalea apparently reached into the driver’s front pant pocket in attempt to rob him, Lightfoot said.

However, an acquaintance of the driver pulled Maalea off of him.

Maalea ran away, but was later seen at Central Avenue and Broadway, where he was arrested on suspicion of robbery, she said.

The driver suffered pain in his face and neck, but declined medical treatment.
