Roundup: Burbank home burglary, Ascencia homeless shelter, Ronda Rousey, Lee Baca
It’s Friday, readers. Today is Jan. 10, 2014. Locals in the Glendale-area can expect to see a high of 74 and low of 49, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service.
We’re rounding up the top news items in the region:
- Burbank police are looking for any information regarding a recent home burglary. Sometime between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., burglars entered a home in the 1200 block of East Tujunga Avenue and made off with an iPad, jewelry, two purses and personal documents.
A report indicates that there are more fights and numerous police calls at Glendale’s emergency winter shelter on Fernando Court this year compared to last year, however, the issues are happening away from downtown retailers. The Glendale National Guard Armory downtown was the previous location for shelter for the past 16 years and Glendale moved its temporary winter shelter to an industrial area on Fernando Court to reduce impacts on the community.
- Less than two weeks after “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey defended her Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight championship at UFC 168, the Glendale Fighting Club-trained champion is gearing up for her UFC 170 main event title defense against Sara McMann on Feb. 22.
Though Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca announced his retirement earlier this week, he might not be leaving the department after all. His spokesman said the sheriff is planning on becoming a reserve deputy for the agency -- volunteering to patrol the county in a sheriff’s black-and-white.
