Hoover High School won the 24th annual Glendale Unified Scholastic Bowl this week.

The academic competition pits teams from the four high schools in the district, including Crescenta Valley, Glendale and Clark Magnet, against each other.

Hoover High topped the pack with 71 points, winning $500. Crescenta Valley High placed second with 69 points and won $250. Third place went to Clark Magnet High with 62 points and bringing home $150, while Glendale High won fourth place with 41 points, winning $100.

The first phase of the competition is an essay contest, where team members are given 60 minutes to write on an assigned topic based on a controversial issue. Hoover High also won the essay portion of the Scholastic Bowl.

Each team’s essay score is used as a base score for the next phase of the competition, which is a quiz format.
