Applications for a $10,000 college scholarship offered by the developer of the Americana at Brand are being accepted through May 1.

The Spirit of American Youth award, offered by Rick Caruso, is open to high school students in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.

Applicants must have a proven community service track record, a cumulative 3.0 GPA, be a legal U.S. citizen and must be enrolled as a first-year student at an accredited university beginning fall 2014.

Students must also complete an essay on how they would invest time in their communities to benefit the next generation and submit teacher recommendations.

“I believe it is important to support and inspire youth — not only to reach for the opportunity to create a brighter future for themselves, but to have a tangible impact on their communities,” Caruso said in a statement. “I encourage as many local students as possible to apply for this scholarship, and I wish the Class of 2014 the best of luck as they step up to the challenges ahead of them.”

Caruso said he is leading the interview committee.

Winners are scheduled to be announced in late June. For more information, go to www.americanaatbrand.com.
