Pacific Park hosting Cesar Chavez events
In preparation for the 13th annual Cesar Chavez Day celebration in Glendale, Pacific Park Library is hosting weekly events to teach children about Chavez’s life.
As the children learn lessons about the civil rights activist and farm worker who rallied union laborers for better working conditions, they are also creating crafts that will be on display at the community event on March 29 at the Pacific Park Community Center.
On Thursday, the children made paper baskets. Last week, they created crafts using corn.
The four-week program is the brainchild of Noor Atif, a student at Clark Magnet High School who is organizing the lesson plans as part of her senior project.
“My senior project focuses on the Spanish language and how the education of Spanish and other foreign languages and their cultures should be encouraged in the United States,” the 17-year-old said in an email.
I thought Cesar Chavez would be a perfect example because despite the hardships he faced throughout his lifetime that forced him to try and forget Spanish, he still fought hard to maintain his language as well as his culture.”
The next craft events are scheduled for March 20 and 27 at 3 p.m. at the Pacific Park Library, 501 S. Pacific Ave.
The March 29 event is set to run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the community center, adjacent to the library. The city of Glendale is organizing the free event featuring family activities, live performances and free carne asada and chicken tacos until 2 p.m.
