Crescenta Valley briefs: Deputy to be honored, Glendale Supt. to answer questions, teen event at library

La Crescenta author Bonnie Schroeder will read excerpts from her recently published novel, “Mending Dreams,” and signing copies at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse, 1010 Foothill Blvd in La Cañada.

Gelson’s will hold a grand opening for its newest location at 9 a.m. next Thursday at 635 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada. The new grocery store will feature a Wolfgang Puck Express, a coffee bar and bakery, among many other amenities.

Rep. Adam Schiff will present Deputy Tai Plunkett with the Congressional Badge of Bravery at 7 p.m. tonight during a meeting of the Crescenta Town Council in the community room of La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. Plunkett is credited with saving a woman’s life during a stabbing attack in 2012 while he was off-duty and unarmed.

The annual Smart-a-Thon benefiting the Mary Pinola/Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce Education fund will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the fourth-floor council room of the USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, 1812 Verdugo Blvd.

Participants of all ages are welcome to form teams or go solo for free in a general knowledge tournament. A $35 reservation is required to be served lunch.
