Suspect pleads not guilty to hash oil, drug charges

A Glendale man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he was producing highly potent hash oil in a potentially volatile home lab.

Andrew Hedenberg, 22, is charged with manufacturing “butane honey oil,” or hash oil, as well as possessing cocaine and methamphetamine for sale, according to a Los Angeles County Superior Court criminal complaint.

Hedenberg, who is being held on $90,000 bail, was arrested Monday after police responded to a report of domestic violence at his home in the 800 block of North Glendale Avenue.

But as police investigated the assault, they reportedly found a lab used to extract oil from marijuana plants inside a detached garage, according to Glendale police.

Detectives discovered about 40 pounds of marijuana, about 2 ounces of “butane honey oil” methamphetamine, hallucinogenic mushrooms and approximately 181 butane cans, of which 145 were empty.

They also seized three large glass tubes, which contained marijuana leaves and were tied off with a filter.

“Butane honey oil” is a waxy substance that can produce an even stronger high for users, who can inhale or vaporize the oil without the strong odor of marijuana.

Code-enforcement officials plan to inspect Hedenberg’s home for any health and safety violations.

Hedenberg is scheduled to appear May 2 for a preliminary hearing in a Los Angeles Superior courtroom.
