Letter: Development’s approval feels rushed

Glendale City Council will soon review a new building proposed for 1407 W. Glenoaks Blvd. near the corner of Sonora Avenue. As a homeowner in the neighborhood I’m concerned about the plan and the approval process.

This would be a mixed-use building of over 200,000 square feet on a lot of just over 40,000 square feet. The design includes a single driveway for 220 parking spaces with no dedicated valet, drop-off or short-term parking in front, all only 200 feet from the already congested Glendale/Sonora intersection and on a block that includes a busy bus stop, a large hotel and the always-jammed DMV office.

Why have planning staff and the Design Review Board rushed this plan through for the Council’s vote with so little regard for existing standards or the legitimate concerns raised by homeowners? Frankly the whole thing stinks and reflects badly on City Hall.

Glendale needs intelligent and attractive development. These buildings last a long time and they impact thousands of residents and visitors every day. Great cities are made one building — and one vote — at a time. The council has the opportunity and the responsibility to rein in the greed of this developer just a little by sending this project back for revisions that will serve all of us better.
