Letter: Plastic bag ban leads to more dog waste

More than a year ago, on Aug. 20, 2013, a letter from Paddi Thomas of Glendale was published in the News-Press Mailbag, appropriately titled, “No plastic bags mean more dog waste in Glendale.” Well, since the city of Los Angeles’ own ban went into effect on Jan. 1, 2014, I’d have to concur with the observant letter writer and aver that no plastic bags means more dog waste in Los Angeles, as well!

When Gov. Moonbeam — oops, California Gov. Jerry Brown — signs a state bill into law that imposes a similar, statewide ban on such plastic bags, I wonder if the increase in “piles next to piles” of unpicked up dog poop will be found in even more communities statewide?

It doesn’t solve the problem to merely lecture dog owners to go get/buy some pick-up bags, available at various places, because manifestly too many dog walkers were never, and are not now, members of this particular environmental choir in the first place. Any further suggestions?
