Letter: Tattered flag sends the wrong signal

Re: “Flying at full staff is an a.m. faux pas,” Mailbag, May 23. Thank you for printing Gene Akers’ letter regarding flag etiquette. Flag etiquette is clearly waning in our community, but on holidays such as this we should all take a moment to be more aware of these symbols of our country.

We have been on a mission to have another section of the Flag Code enforced in Glendale, namely that part which states that when a flag is so worn that it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed.

We are shocked and disappointed at how often we see torn and tattered flags that continue to be flown in Glendale. Specifically, we have been on a mission recently to have the torn flag at the National Guard Armory removed and replaced. As Mr. Akers’ letter suggests, of all places one would think it would be done correctly, it would be at a military installation.

It has been weeks since we began a telephone and email campaign, which has included contact with National Guard offices in Virginia and Sacramento, and the torn flag continues to fly.

We are baffled that the flag hasn’t simply been taken down until it can be replaced.

We take pride in our country and the flag is one of its most important symbols. Let’s be mindful of that powerful symbol.
