On Campus at GCC: Music, dance performances coming up at GCC

Glendale Community College’s college choir, chamber singers and students in the school’s opera workshop will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on May 20 in the college’s auditorium. The performance will feature choral works and opera excerpts led by directors Tobin Sparfeld and Anita Protich. Tickets will be $7 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.

On May 21, the Glendale College Community Orchestra, led by conductor Beth Pflueger, will perform at 3 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. It is a full orchestra with complete woodwind, brass, percussion and string sections. Admission will be $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors.

Pflueger is also coordinator of the applied music program, which features some of the best student musicians at the college. Students in the program will present a free recital by instrumentalists and vocalists at 7:30 p.m. on May 19 in the auditorium.

On June 1, the Glendale Community College chamber jazz ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium with musical director Chris Coulter. General admission will be $10 and $7 for students and seniors.

Also on June 1, a free chamber music recital, coordinated by Paul Sherman,will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in room 211 in the auditorium, where a free piano recital by the advanced piano students of Linda Zoolalian will later be presented at 7:30 p.m. on June 9.

On June 3, the college’s vocal jazz ensemble and jazz guitar ensemble as well as students in the jazz vocal workshop will perform instrumental and vocal arrangements of jazz and popular music under the direction of Clare and Byron Delto at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission will be $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors.

Peter Green will lead the concert singers in a performance at 4 p.m. on June 4 in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1020 N. Brand Blvd. General admission will be $15 and $10 for students and seniors.

The final concert of the season will be by Glendale Community College’s jazz big band, led by director Byron Delto, at 4 p.m. on June 11 in the auditorium. The performance will feature instrumental and vocal arrangements of jazz and popular music. Admission will be $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors.

Annual dance performance opens this month

Glendale Community College’s dance program will start an eight-performance run on May 30 in the Dance Theater in the Sierra Nevada Gym.

“Dance Performance 2017” will feature choreography and performances by students in dance production classes and is directed by Dora Krannig and Lynn McMurrey.

Evening performances will be at 8 p.m. May 30 through June 3. Afternoon shows will be at 12:20 p.m. on May 31 and June 1. The final show will be at 2 p.m. on June 4.

Admission is free. No children under 5 years old will be admitted. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Baja program holds summer classes

Glendale Community College’s Baja, Calif., field studies program will be offering classes this summer in biology and marine biology, and there will be a creative-writing workshop.

The college has been holding classes on the Baja, Calif., peninsula of Mexico since 1974. The field station, called Estación del Mar Cortés, is located at the water’s edge, near the town of Bahía de los Angeles. The area is referred to as the “Galapagos of Mexico” because of its natural beauty and biodiversity. The field station has classrooms, dorms, a living room, kitchen, showers and restrooms.

For Biology 125 and 126, the focus will be on surveying the diversity of life in the marine environment. Biology 131 will be an investigation into the local biological ecosystems of the Sea of Cortés. In English 103, students will experiment with a variety of literary forms including poetry, short stories and memoirs.

The cost for each course is $799, which covers room, board and transportation.
