Kathy Kashuba, president of the woman’s philanthropic organization L’Aureole, completed her year in which the group raised $10,000 for The Zone Academy, an after-school program at the Glendale Salvation Army.

Benefit Chairwoman Joanie Taylor presented the check to Rio and Rachel Ray, the latter of whom is a captain with the Glendale Salvation Army, during the organization’s installation meeting in May.

The Zone program offers students between the ages of 7 and 13 help with homework and literacy, computer lab experience, recreational opportunities including soccer, basketball and karate, a manners and etiquette course, healthy snacks and a safe environment, Rio Ray said.

“The purpose of The Zone is to give children a chance to succeed academically, socially and in life,” he added.

The funds were raised at the annual fashion show in April at the La Canada Country Club. The models showing the latest fashions from Holiday Hats & Gowns were Jeri Adamson, Shirley De Perini, Dianne Graebner, Amanda Lyons, Georgia McAninch, Rachel Ray, Grace Sheldon-Williams, Susan Skiffington and Jennifer Vearchell. Musical entertainment was provided by Mel Dangcil.

The new executive board officers installed at the May meeting were Jeannine Jones, president; Mary Wollam, first vice-president; Bonnie Kunkle, second vice-president; Kathy Kashuba, third vice-president; Carole Stonebraker, fourth vice-president; Mary Owen, treasurer; and Margaret Clarke, recording secretary.

The bride-to-be graduated from California Lutheran University in 2012 with a degree in communications. She is employed as an outdoor school instructor at El Camino Pines Lutheran Camp in Frazier Park.

The groom-to-be graduated from Glendale High School and received degrees in religion and psychology from California Lutheran University in 2011. An August wedding is planned in Mount Vernon, Wash. After a short honeymoon, the couple will reside in Berkeley.

YWCA Boutique offers items old and new

A new fundraising idea is being implemented by the YWCA Glendale, said Lisa Raggio, senior director.

Organizers are offering a chance to pick up summer fashions that are new or gently used at a boutique from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 15 at the YWCA, 735 W. Lexington Drive. Funds will go to YWCA programs and services.

The boutique will include brand-new fashions and accessories from vendors such as Treasured Accessories, Poetic Potions, Classy Bag Lady, D.J. Giles, Bath and Body Works and Buddha Jeans, as well as trendy thrift-store bargains.

“We have done boutiques in the past but not for a long time, and not where we combine new items and gently used items,” Raggio said.

Helping coordinate the event are longtime Glendale resident Jeri Benton, who is a member of many service organizations in town and who has a wealth of experience in executing boutiques, Virginia Ruiz, YWCA executive assistant, and Ticktockers from the National Charity League.

Players raising funds and recruiting volunteers

The Stepping Stone Players will host a kickoff fundraiser/volunteer recruitment dinner from 5 to 8:30 p.m. May 30 at Casa de Ramos, 827 W. Glenoaks Blvd. in Glendale.

The Mexican restaurant is donating 15% of the night’s proceeds to the community theater when supporters mention the Stepping Stone Players to their server.

There will be a prize drawing for a set of four Disneyland tickets offered at $5 a chance. A 50/50 drawing will also be held at $1 a chance and the winner need not be present.

In addition, there will be sign-up opportunities to volunteer or donate funds to the August production of Lionel Bart’s musical, “Oliver!”
