Re: “Weaver is correct about statue,” Mailbag, Nov. 9. While letter writer Kym Murphy is within her right to heap praise on Mayor Dave Weaver because she agrees with his stance on the comfort-women statue, she — and many others — seem to keep missing the primary issue.

Mayor Weaver is entitled to his individual opinion on the memorial and doesn’t have to like it. But he does need to recognize that its placement were approved by a majority vote of the City Council. For him to write a letter to Japanese officials reiterating a personal position on official city stationery is an egregious violation of his elected duty and a breach of his authority. Such an action is completely irresponsible.
