Photo Gallery: L.A. Zoo names newborn Pudu after K-pop star Lee Dong-hyuck, a.k.a. Haechan
A baby southern pudu, one of the smallest deer in the world, stepped out for public viewing at the L.A. Zoo on Thursday. The young pudu, here with his mother, named Steph, was named for the K pop star known as Haechan. The naming was the result of a Facebook fundraiser by the zoo. Haechan was born Dec. 19 at the zoo.

They eat vegetation including ferns, fruits, leaves and berries. The pudu’s wild populations are decreasing due to loss of habitat.

Zoo trumpeted the campaign surrounding the newborn pudu. “Due to Haechan and NCT fans’ overwhelming enthusiasm, this campaign raised over $2,500 in support of our conservation efforts,” said Kait Hilliard, vice president of marketing at the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Assn. “We are thrilled to see this groundswell of support and excitement.”
