Chess champion Phiona Mutesi of Uganda visited Clark Magnet High School in Glendale with her coach Robert Katende on Monday, April 28, 2014. Mutesi grew up in the slums of Uganda and through the game of chess has lifted herself out of the slums onto the international stage for chess and to raise awareness about the plight of her Ugandan people. After her presentation for the students of Clark Magnet, she played against local chess grandmaster Tatev Abrahamyan, of Glendale.
