The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.
Emilia Borkowski (Crescenta Valley High, 2012) Cal State Fullerton tennis sophomore: Along with doubles partner Kalika Slevcove, Borkowski turned in her finest accomplishment yet at Fullerton, winning the Matador Collegiate Invitational doubles black bracket title Sunday at Cal State Northridge.
Borkowski and Slevcove defeated Portland’s Amanda Zuidema and Maja Mladenovic, 8-4, in the championship match.
The tandem began play Friday with an 8-1 win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Abigail Bacharach and Bryn Bacharach. Borkowski lost a hard-fought singles match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, to Mladenovic in the red bracket singles tourney. On the second day of action, Borkowski and Slevcove defeated the Arizona squad of Laura Oldham and Inge Hendrix, 8-6.
Borkowski is currently 1-6 in singles play and 5-3 in doubles.
Borkowski, a redshirt sophomore who missed the 2013-14 season with an injury, turned in an excellent freshman season, regarded as one of the finest in recent memory for a Titans first-year player. She finished 13-7 in singles play and went 6-8 in doubles action.
Next up for the former Falcon is the Jack Kramer Invitational in Palos Verdes, which begins Thursday and runs through Sunday. Thereafter, Fullerton tennis is off until January.
Breeana Koemans (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2012) Northeastern soccer sophomore: Koemans, a former All-Area Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year and one of the most decorated players in Flintridge Sacred Heart history, seems to be coming into her own as a regular in the starting lineup.
Northeastern defeated Drexel, 1-0, to claim the Colonial Athletic Assn. regular season title Sunday. It was Koemans’ third consecutive start and her sixth over the last seven games. Northeastern sits at 12-4-3 with a 7-1-1 conference mark, having gone unbeaten over its last four with a 3-0-1 tally.
Koeman’s first start of the season came Oct. 3 in a 4-0 win over Towson in which she scored her first collegiate goal on an unassisted blast from 26 yards out in the 83rd minute.
Koemans, a redshirt sophomore, has a goal and an assist, which was the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Boston University on Sept. 14. She’s played in 14 games, starting six.
Another Flintridge Sacred Heart alumna, Krista Meaglia, a true sophomore, is also plying her trade on the pitch for Northeastern, having played in seven games, with her goal Oct. 19 against Charleston holding up as the game-winner in the 3-0 victory.
Northeastern returns to action Nov. 7, when it hosts the CAA conference tournament.
Mary Schroeder (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2010) Regis volleyball senior: Schroeder came up big for Regis in a crucial Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference 3-1 win over UC Colorado Springs Tuesday, as she tallied nine kills and a team-high five blocks.
The 25-22, 22-25, 25-14, 25-21 win earned Regis (15-8, 10-5 in conference) a berth in the upcoming conference tournament.
Schroeder, an outside hitter, hasn’t missed a match or a set this season and has accounted for 224 kills (2.87 per set) along with 49 digs and 41 blocks.
Schroeder, a transfer from UC Davis, isn’t the only local on the squad, as she’s joined by Alessandra Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart).
Orlandini, a junior defensive specialist, is a starter, as well, having played in all 23 matches and 81 sets. She’s notched 230 digs and 31 assists, having tallied 13 digs against Colorado Springs.
Regis returns to the floor Saturday against Colorado Christian in the first of three remaining matches before the conference tournament commences Nov. 11.
Jacob LaPorte (St. Francis High, 2011) Hawaii at Hilo soccer junior: LaPorte has become a mainstay in Hawaii Hilo’s starting lineup, but his most valuable contributions came during a terrific two-game stretch in September.
Hilo won two in a row on the road, defeating Hawaii Pacific, 3-1, on Sept. 13 and then Chaminade, 2-1, on Sept. 15. La Porte scored the game-winning goal in both matches.
For the season, though, those tallies have stood as his only points.
LaPorte has played in 14 of his team’s 15 matches, having started every match he’s played, with his 22 shots second on the team.
The Vulcans are 6-8-1, 4-5 in the Pac West Conference with a conference match Saturday at BYU Hawaii next on the agenda.
Katie Callister (Crescenta Valley High, 2013) Brigham Young University Hawaii soccer sophomore: In her second season with the Seasiders, Callister has seen action in nine matches with a pair of starts.
She’s tallied one goal and it was an important one, as she delivered the game-winner against Dominican in a Pac West Conference match Sept. 27. The Seasiders won, 2-1, on the strength of Callister’s tally in the 86th minute.
However, BYU has fallen on hard times, having lost eight in a row after Monday’s defeat at Fresno Pacific.
Consequently, Callister has not played in the last five matches. BYU Hawaii is 3-12, 2-8 in conference heading into Monday. BYU hosts state and conference rival Hawai’i Hilo on Saturday in its next match.
Meghan Spencer (Glendale High, 2013) Oxford Emory College soccer sophomore: Spencer is turning in another stellar season for an Eagles squad that is ranked sixth in the latest National Junior College Athletic Assn. Division III poll.
Spencer and Oxford Emory (11-1-2) have won six in a row, all by shutout, as the sophomore has tallied a team-high 14 goals along with five assists. Spencer, who turned in a hat trick Sept. 2 against Georgia Military, has tallied points in three straight games, with two goals Oct. 7 against Faulkner University, an assist Oct. 17 against Emmanuel College and a goal Oct. 19 versus Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Spencer is ranked 21st in the nation in goals scored, 27th in points and 18th in goals per game.
Oxford Emory returns to action for postseason play on Halloween at Anne Arundel Community College.
