Suh, Crescenta Valley football wear down rival Muir

GLENDALE — It’s been a busy first half of the season for Joe Suh.

While not scoring touchdowns as the starting running back for the Crescenta Valley High football team, he’s serving as the school’s associated student-body president. For good measure, the senior took his SAT exam in Florida during the first week of the season while the team was in Orlando.

Suh appeared in excellent form Friday night, as he scored three touchdowns to power host Crescenta Valley to a convincing 38-8 Pacific League win against rival Muir at Moyse Field.

“He’s an excellent player, but he’ll take on a lot of responsibilities,” Crescenta Valley coach Paul Schilling. “He’s such a big part of our offense in that he can do so many things well. He had another great game.

“The first half tonight was the first time we have gelled on offense. It’s always a huge game between us and Muir. Our guys just came ready to play.”

Suh rushed for two touchdowns and caught another, all in the first half, to ignite Crescenta Valley (5-0, 2-0 in league). Suh finished the contest with 117 yards rushing in 16 carries and caught two passes for 47 yards. Quarterback Cole Doyle completed 14 of 27 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns for CV against Muir (2-3, 0-2).

Suh opened the scoring on a nine-yard run to give the Falcons, who won the league championship last season, a 7-0 lead with 7:23 left in the first quarter. Suh’s touchdown capped a nine-play drive.

Crescenta Valley, ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division VI behind Bishop Diego, got a four-yard touchdown run from Suh to extend the lead to 14-0 with 9:45 to go in the second quarter.

“I felt confident coming out and you get up when you play teams like Muir,” Suh said. “I think we were prepared on both sides and we wanted to keep it going.

“I got some great blocks from the line. We just want to keep things going.”

After Crescenta Valley’s Tyler Lobianco intercepted a pass at the Muir 26-yard line on the ensuing possession, the Falcons got a 20-yard field goal from Chris Wood to make it 17-0 with 7:14 remaining in the first half.

Suh caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Doyle to give the Falcons a 24-0 advantage with 3:24 left in the second quarter.

After Crescenta Valley got the ball back following a punt that appeared to graze the leg of a Crescenta Valley player and was recovered by Muir, the officials briefly huddled and gave the Falcons possession.

Lobianco caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Doyle to give Crescenta Valley a 31-0 lead with 1:46 to go in the first half. Muir coach Antyone Sims came on to the field and argued with officials apparently about Muir not keeping the ball following the punt. Sims was ejected.

Crescenta Valley’s Jordan Nelson caught a three-yard pass from Doyle to make it 38-0 with 10:38 left in the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs closed out the scoring with 30 seconds remaining on a nine-yard run by reserve quarterback Caleb Snowden, who then tossed a pass to John Freeman for the two-point conversion.

Crescenta Valley’s Austin Novak caught four passes for 80 yards. Muir’s Nick Moore had six receptions for 113 yards.

Crescenta Valley will take part in a league road contest against Pasadena at 7 p.m. Friday.
